Salaam!

My Farsi lessons are going great so far! It’s been so fun to say “I’m taking Farsi lessons” and confuse the shit out of people who don’t know that I’m Iranian and can’t wrap their heads around why a Black person would want to learn the language. Especially when it’s other Iranians that are astonished that I’m one of them, it always reminds me of the important work of people like Priscillia (Collective for Black Iranians)and Beeta (The Color Black: Enslavement and Erasure in Iran).

Movies You Can Watch With Your Cousins

Growing up with only one American parent, Thanksgiving wasn’t a big deal in our house, just another excuse for our family to get together. While I didn’t watch a ton of movies growing up, I do have a core memory of going to the movies with my cousins after Thanksgiving dinner every single year. All my cousins are older than me so I felt so cool going to the theater with them. I won’t be going to the movies today, but we’ll probably watch a movie while my husband makes the Iraqi jeweled rice that he grew up eating during the holidays. If you find yourself wanting to watch something this afternoon, consider one of these:

  1. Julie & Julia (2009)

  2. Rushmore (1998)

  3. One Of Them Days (2025)

  4. Sister Midnight (2024)

  5. Mickey 17 (2025)

  6. The Holdovers (2023)

  7. Be Kind Rewind (2008)

  8. Whip It (2009)

  9. Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
